BREATHE|Smart 2 User Guide

How does it work?

BREATHE|Smart 2 contains an accurate laser particulate sensor which measures concentrations of harmful particulates in the air around you. This is converted into an Air Quality Index and displayed on the screen so you can easily see the quality of the air you are breathing.

AIR QUALITY

This is the main screen and shows the current air quality. The monitor can show either the Air Quality Index (AQI), or the actual concentration of particulate matter. This can be changed in the ‘Settings’ menu.

The colours and descriptions displayed are based on the US Environmental Protection Agency Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for you. It focuses on health effects you may experience within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the risk to health.

Air Quality Index (AQI)

AQI

For more information on AQI, see https://airnow.gov

PM2.5 Concentration
When this option is selected, the display shows the concentration of PM2.5 given in micrograms (one-millionth of a gram) per cubic metre of air or µg/m3. The higher the number displayed on the device, the higher the amount of deadly particulates in the air that can be harmful to your lungs.

Try to minimise your exposure to pollution:

  • Limit physical activity when air pollution is high.

  • Change your route. Exposure can be reduced by up to 50% simply by taking a side or back street.

  • If you are indoors, open windows. This may seem counter-intuitive but sometimes the air pollution indoors can be worse than outdoors.

HISTORY

BREATHE|Smart 2 stores your exposure history for up to 30 days.  This information can be displayed as the summary data or plotted as a graph. The data is stored for 3 time periods, current day, previous 7 days, and previous 30 days.

BREATHE Smart

‘Active Time’ is the number of hours and minutes the monitor has been active in the time period.

BREATHE|Score

BREATHE|Score is a longer term way to monitor your exposure to air pollution.  It updates every hour with an average of your exposure over the previous hour. The better the air you are exposed to, the higher the score will be. The score starts at 50, try to get it to 100.

BREATHE Smart

Your current BREATHE|Score is also displayed on the main AIR QUALITY screen. The percentage of the green circle displayed indicates the current score, e.g.,

                    Using BREATHE|Smart 2 at home

                    Using BREATHE|Smart 2 outside
This is a sensitive product and is not designed for fixed installation outdoors. The monitor draws air into the inlet and through the sensor to measure particulate matter concentrations. It is therefore not waterproof, do not get wet or store in damp conditions as this may damage the monitor.

This device contains a Class 2 laser. Receiving eye exposure from a Class 2 laser beam, either accidentally or as a result of misuse will not usually result in injury due to the natural aversion response. This causes individuals to blink and avert their head thereby terminating the eye exposure. Repeated, deliberate exposure to the laser beam may lead to eye injury.
